Government formation in Tamil Nadu has entered a phase of uncertainty, with C. Joseph Vijay unlikely to take oath as Chief Minister immediately despite his party’s strong debut in the Assembly elections.
Sources indicate that Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), which emerged as the single-largest party, is still working to secure enough support to cross the majority threshold in the 234-member House. The party has won 108 seats, leaving it short of the 118-mark needed to form the government.
The situation is further complicated as Vijay is expected to vacate one of the two constituencies he won—Tiruchirapalli East and Perambur—which would bring down TVK’s effective strength to 107.
While the Indian National Congress has extended support with its five MLAs, taking the combined tally to 113, the numbers still fall short of a clear majority.
Amid the evolving political scenario, Vijay met Rajendra Arlekar at Lok Bhavan as part of efforts to stake claim to power. The Governor acknowledged receiving a formal communication from TVK asserting that it has the numbers to form the government and scheduled a meeting with the party leadership.
Earlier in the day, state Congress leaders, including K. Selvaperunthagai and Girish Chodankar, met Vijay at the party headquarters in Chennai and handed over a letter of support, signalling backing from the party’s high command.
Despite the momentum, uncertainty remains over whether the Governor is fully satisfied with the numbers presented so far. As a result, the swearing-in ceremony is unlikely to take place immediately, with TVK continuing its efforts to gather additional support and cross the crucial majority mark.
