Law enforcement agencies in West Bengal have intensified action following reports of post-election unrest, with Director General of Police Siddh Nath Gupta confirming that 200 FIRs have been registered and 433 individuals arrested since the Assembly results were declared on May 4.
Addressing the media on Wednesday, the DGP said that authorities have also taken preventive measures, placing over 1,100 people under detention to curb further escalation of violence.
The update comes shortly after the Election Commission of India issued strict instructions to the state administration, directing officials and deployed forces to enforce a zero-tolerance approach towards any incidents of post-poll violence.
Security Reallocation and Law & Order Focus
Gupta also clarified recent changes in security deployment concerning former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and Abhishek Banerjee. He explained that while both leaders continue to receive security cover as per official protocol, certain additional arrangements previously in place have been withdrawn.
These redeployed personnel are now being utilised to strengthen law and order management across sensitive areas in the state.
Appeal for Restraint
Issuing a public appeal, the DGP urged citizens to avoid retaliatory actions. He emphasised that grievances should be addressed through legal channels rather than personal action.
Police, he added, will not hesitate to initiate cases on their own if incidents come to light even without formal complaints, reinforcing a proactive policing stance.
Central Forces Remain Deployed
To maintain stability, around 500 companies of the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) continue to be stationed across West Bengal. Their deployment, as per the Election Commission’s directive, will remain in place until further review.
