Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal on Thursday outlined the seat distribution under the Women’s Reservation Bill, stating that 272 seats out of the proposed 815 in the Lok Sabha will be reserved for women.

During the debate in the Lok Sabha, Meghwal said the reservation was based on a straightforward calculation of one-third of the proposed House strength, ensuring 33 percent representation for women in Parliament.

According to the minister, this provision will come into effect after the next Census and the delimitation process scheduled after 2026.

Lok Sabha Strength to Increase, No State to Lose Seats

Meghwal clarified that the total strength of the Lok Sabha is expected to rise significantly from the current 543 seats to 815, an increase of nearly 50 percent.

He assured the House that no state would lose its current number of seats under the new arrangement. Instead, the additional seats created after delimitation will be used to implement the women’s quota.

The government says this approach will protect existing state representation while expanding opportunities for women in national politics.

Women’s Reservation Bill Seen as Historic Reform

The legislation, officially called the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam, is being projected as a landmark move aimed at improving women’s participation in legislative decision-making.

The bill seeks to ensure greater representation of women in Parliament and is expected to significantly alter the composition of the Lok Sabha once implemented.

The government has described the measure as a major step toward strengthening gender equality in India’s democratic institutions.

Meghwal Adds Emotional Note in Parliament Debate

In a notable moment during the debate, Meghwal combined policy discussion with a personal tribute to women’s empowerment.

Referring to his book Ek Safar Humsafar Ke Saath, dedicated to his wife, he spoke about the role of women in nation-building and described them as equal partners in India’s development journey.

He recited a Hindi verse in the House praising the role of women in shaping a stronger India, drawing appreciation from members across party lines.

Women to Become Partners in Decision-Making

Emphasising the significance of the reform, Meghwal said the current Amrit Kaal offers an opportunity to bring women into the centre of governance.

He stressed that women would now become active participants in the decision-making process and that their inclusion in legislative institutions would strengthen democracy.

The government believes that the implementation of the Women’s Reservation Bill will create a new political framework where women play a larger role in policy-making.

Major Political Shift Expected

Once implemented, the Women’s Reservation Bill is expected to bring one of the biggest changes in India’s parliamentary structure in decades.

By increasing the number of seats and reserving one-third for women, the bill is likely to reshape the political landscape and open the door for greater female participation in governance.
