BJP Tightens Grip In Gujarat Local Polls As Congress, AAP Register Surprise Wins
The counting of votes for Gujarat’s local body elections has thrown up a mixed political picture, with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) maintaining its dominance across several district and taluka panchayat seats, while the Congress and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) managed to score a few significant victories in select constituencies.
With counting underway across districts, early trends suggest that the BJP continues to hold a commanding position in Gujarat’s grassroots politics, although isolated setbacks for the ruling party have given the opposition some reason to cheer.
Congress Pulls Off Surprise Victory In Maya Ahir’s Village
One of the most talked-about results came from Borda seat in Talaja taluka panchayat of Bhavnagar district, where Congress candidate Zaver Bhalia defeated the BJP by 367 votes.
The result drew attention as Borda is the native village of noted folk writer Maya Ahir, making the Congress victory symbolically significant in the region.
The win is being seen as an important morale booster for the Congress amid BJP’s larger dominance in the state.
BJP Sweeps Multiple District Panchayat Seats Across Gujarat
The BJP registered a strong performance in multiple districts, winning key seats in Gandhinagar, Mahisagar, Bharuch, Vadodara, Botad, Junagadh, Patan, Surat, and Navsari.
In Gandhinagar District Panchayat, BJP candidates won the Santej, Chiloda, Dabhoda, Itadara, and Bilodara seats, while the party also secured victories in Batkwada, Bakor, and Vaddala seats in Mahisagar district.
The party’s continued dominance across these local bodies underlines its strong organisational network and rural voter support in Gujarat.
AAP Scores Big Wins In Narmada, Surat And Chhota Udepur
The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) managed to deliver notable performances in a few districts, especially in Narmada and Chhota Udepur.
AAP candidate Dr. Dayaram Vasava won the Jawli seat in Narmada District Panchayat by a massive 8,918 votes, while Ishwar Natubhai secured the Navgam district panchayat seat in Chhota Udepur with a margin of 9,213 votes.
The party also won three taluka panchayat seats in Surat district, signalling that AAP is gradually building pockets of influence in Gujarat’s local political landscape.
Former MLA Bhupat Bhayani Suffers Major Defeat
In one of the biggest upsets of the local elections, former MLA Bhupat Bhayani, who recently left AAP and joined the BJP, was defeated in the Bhensan District Panchayat election in Junagadh.
AAP candidate Dinesh Ruparelia won the seat by around 1,700 votes, dealing a political blow to Bhayani and handing AAP a high-profile victory.
The result has added an unexpected twist to the BJP’s otherwise strong performance in the local polls.
BJP Maintains Upper Hand Despite Opposition Gains
Despite Congress and AAP picking up some important seats, the BJP remains firmly ahead in the larger electoral picture.
The party had already secured over 700 seats unopposed before polling, giving it a substantial advantage even before the counting process began.
With fresh wins pouring in from district and taluka panchayats across the state, the BJP appears set to retain overwhelming control in Gujarat’s local governance structure.
Gujarat Results Seen As Political Signal Ahead Of Future Elections
Political observers are viewing these local body election results as an important indicator ahead of upcoming state-level political contests.
While the BJP’s dominance reinforces its grassroots strength, the isolated wins by Congress and AAP show that the opposition continues to retain relevance in select pockets.
