A day after the tragic killing of Ram Gopal Mishra during a religious procession for the immersion of Goddess Durga's idol, chaos erupted in the Mahsi Tehsil as the victim's family, accompanied by thousands of protestors, staged a demonstration with his dead body. The protestors expressed their outrage over the incident, leading to the torching of several properties, including a private hospital and a two-wheeler showroom.
The situation escalated significantly after Mishra?s body was returned to his village following a post-mortem examination on Sunday morning. Tensions have been running high since the shooting incident, which took place in the Mahrajganj Bazar area of Mansoor village. Mishra was reportedly shot over a dispute related to music being played during the procession.
In the aftermath of the shooting, which left Mishra fatally injured, local authorities were forced to deploy tear gas to disperse the agitated crowd. According to family members, Mishra was rushed to the hospital but succumbed to his injuries during treatment. Alongside Mishra, approximately a dozen others sustained injuries during the violence that erupted in the area.
Local Hindu organizations quickly mobilized, demanding immediate action against those responsible for the shooting. Responding to public pressure, Superintendent of Police suspended Hardi Police Station head SK Verma, along with Mahsi Outpost in-charge Shiv Kumar, for their inadequate response to the situation.
In a statement, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath condemned the violence, asserting, "Those responsible will face strict action. The perpetrators will not be spared." He directed local authorities to identify the miscreants involved and ensure justice is served.
Despite the unrest, CM Yogi emphasized the importance of continuing the traditional idol immersion rituals, instructing officials to communicate with religious organizations to facilitate the immersion on time.
The situation remains sensitive as local authorities work to restore order in the Mahsi Tehsil, with heightened security measures in place to prevent further escalation of communal tensions.
