Vande Mataram Is The Slogan Of A Soldier’s Last Breath: Amit Shah Defends Debate In Lok Sabha

In a powerful address during the Lok Sabha proceedings on Tuesday, Union Home Minister Amit Shah strongly defended the ongoing parliamentary discussion on Vande Mataram, asserting that the national song is woven into the country’s identity and should never be trivialised as a political tool. His remarks came after some opposition members questioned the timing and need for a detailed debate on the subject.

Shah dismissed the criticism, stating that the significance of Vande Mataram is timeless and essential for the vision of a “strong and self-reliant India by 2047.” He said the national song has played a defining role in shaping India’s freedom struggle and continues to inspire generations.

“Some members raised questions in the Lok Sabha on the need for these discussions on Vande Mataram. The need for dedication towards Vande Mataram was important then, it is important now, and it will remain important for the bright future we envision for 2047,” Shah asserted.

Responding to insinuations that the debate was influenced by the upcoming West Bengal elections, the Home Minister said such claims were an attempt to undermine the sanctity of the national song. “They want to demean the glorification of Vande Mataram by linking it to Bengal polls. Yes, Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay was from Bengal, Anand Math has its roots in Bengal—but Vande Mataram is not limited to Bengal or even to India alone. It is a universal call of devotion,” he said.

Shah further emphasised that Vande Mataram carries emotional weight far beyond political boundaries. Citing the sacrifices of security personnel, he stated, “When a soldier at the border, or a policeman guarding the nation from within, lays down his life for the country, Vande Mataram is the slogan he raises. It embodies the spirit of ultimate sacrifice.”
