Shiv Sena-UBT’s 65 Corporators Head To Konkan Office For Key Registration, Political Tensions Rise

Political activity in Mumbai intensified on Wednesday as all 65 newly elected corporators of Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray faction) prepared to complete their official registration process, a crucial step in the formation of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). The group gathered at Sena Bhavan in the morning and left together by bus for the Konkan Commissioner’s Office, signalling unity and organisational discipline at a time of sharp political contest.

The registration is mandatory under civic rules and formally records the corporators’ allegiance to Shiv Sena (UBT). With the race for Mumbai’s powerful mayoral post entering a decisive phase, the move is being seen as a clear assertion of the party’s strength and intent in the post-election scenario.

The development comes amid escalating political tension and serious allegations traded between rival camps. Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut alleged that attempts were being made to influence and monitor corporators through phone surveillance. He claimed that such practices were aimed at manipulating the mayoral election process and described them as undemocratic. Raut further alleged that political decisions regarding Mumbai were being controlled by forces outside Maharashtra, a charge that has added to the heated atmosphere.

The BJP strongly rejected these accusations. Party leaders dismissed the claims as politically motivated and said their party depended on the confidence and support of elected representatives, not coercive tactics. BJP functionaries also countered by raising questions about alleged surveillance during the previous Maha Vikas Aghadi government, turning the focus back on the opposition.

The backdrop to the confrontation is a major shift in Mumbai’s political landscape. For the first time in decades, the Thackeray family’s long-standing dominance over the BMC has been broken. The BJP emerged as the single largest party in the recent civic elections, while the Shiv Sena faction led by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde also secured a significant number of seats. Together, the Mahayuti alliance claims a clear numerical advantage in the House.

Following the results, Shiv Sena (Shinde faction) moved its corporators to a city hotel, officially describing it as an orientation programme. However, the move sparked speculation and criticism from opponents, who viewed it as an effort to prevent political poaching. Chief Minister Shinde has maintained that the next mayor will be from the ruling alliance, indicating that the Shiv Sena may stake a claim in keeping with party tradition and legacy.
