'No One On Earth Has Demolished As Many Temples As BJP,' Says Akhilesh Yadav

Samajwadi Party president and former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav on Friday launched a scathing political offensive against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), accusing it of causing large-scale destruction of religious sites and historic urban spaces under the guise of development.

Addressing a press conference, Yadav claimed that no other political force, anywhere in the world, has collectively caused as much damage to temples as the BJP. He argued that India’s ancient cities deserve preservation, not demolition, and urged policymakers to learn from international examples.

Pointing to European cities, Yadav said countries such as Italy, France, and England have protected centuries-old streets and heritage structures rather than erasing them. He cited cities like Venice as examples of how historic character can be maintained while still allowing modern life to function. According to him, similar sensitivity should guide redevelopment efforts in India’s culturally significant cities.

Turning his focus to Varanasi (Kashi), Yadav alleged that the city’s religious and historical identity has suffered severe damage in recent years. He claimed that numerous ancient temples once existed in the city and accused the ruling party of being responsible for their destruction. In a sharp remark, he alleged that “no one on earth has demolished as many temples” as those associated with the BJP.

Earlier in the day, the SP chief also raised concerns on social media over the ongoing demolition drive in Dal Mandi, one of Kashi’s oldest and most crowded traditional markets. The area is currently undergoing major changes as part of a road-widening project linked to the Kashi Vishwanath corridor, a move that has affected hundreds of small traders and residents.

Yadav alleged that shopkeepers and families in Dal Mandi are being displaced to benefit individuals close to the ruling establishment. He warned that the public would not remain silent in the face of what he described as injustice and oppression.

Escalating his attack further, Yadav claimed that financial motives, not public welfare, drive the BJP’s policies. He alleged that the party’s leadership is focused on power for monetary gain rather than governance or social responsibility.
