Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Friday inaugurated Phase 2 of the Mumbai Metro Line 3 project, marking a significant leap in the city’s urban transportation infrastructure. The newly launched 9.6-kilometre underground stretch connects Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC) to Acharya Atre Chowk in Worli, enhancing connectivity across Mumbai’s dense central corridor.

Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and senior government officials were also present at the inauguration ceremony. Both CM Fadnavis and Dy CM Shinde took a ride on the freshly commissioned route, showcasing the state government’s commitment to delivering on key infrastructure promises.

“This is a major milestone in Mumbai’s transit transformation. With this underground extension, lakhs of commuters will benefit from a faster, safer, and more sustainable travel experience,” said CM Fadnavis during the launch.

The BKC-Worli extension is part of the larger 33.5-km Colaba-Bandra-SEEPZ corridor, being implemented by the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (MMRCL)—a joint venture between the Government of India and the Government of Maharashtra. The newly added section includes six crucial underground stations between Dharavi and Worli and had recently received approval from the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS), allowing commercial operations to commence from Saturday, May 10.

This development follows the earlier successful launch of the 12.69-km stretch from Aarey to BKC, featuring 11 stations (10 underground and one at-grade station at Aarey, which also houses the metro’s car depot).

When completed, Mumbai Metro Line 3 will run from Colaba in South Mumbai to SEEPZ in the north, covering some of the city’s most congested and technically challenging areas. The full line will include 27 stations and is projected to serve a daily ridership of 14 lakh passengers in its first year of operation.
