The Gujarat government is planning to launch a single online portal that will bring together all student scholarship schemes offered by different departments. This big step aims to make it easier for students to apply for scholarships and get financial help without confusion.
This idea comes from the third report of the Gujarat Administrative Reforms Commission (GARC), which was submitted to Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel on Monday. The commission is led by Hasmukh Adhia, Principal Advisor to the CM.
Currently, the Education Department, Tribal Welfare Department, and Social Justice Department all offer different scholarships with separate rules and websites. Because of this, students often face difficulties with multiple forms, documents, and confusing eligibility rules.
To fix this, GARC has recommended a new online platform called the Gujarat Unified Scholarship Portal (GUSP). This will:
- Combine all scholarship schemes in one place
- Make applying simpler and faster
- Help track student applications with a Child Tracking System (CTS) using unique student IDs
- Reduce duplication and ensure deserving students get the help they need
The Education Department has already started working with the Tribal Welfare Department to simplify admissions and scholarship processes. A common entrance exam for their schools has been introduced this year. Now, they are also working to include the Social Justice Department in the scholarship portal system.
The new system is inspired by other states like Telangana, Odisha, Maharashtra, and Kerala, which have seen success with similar platforms.
Gujarat offers many types of scholarships, such as:
- Pre- and post-matric scholarships for tribal students
- MYSY scholarships for general category students with merit and income criteria
- Assistance for medical, engineering, and PhD students
- Loans for students studying abroad, and even bicycles for school girls
