Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Monday launched a sharp political attack on the Congress while addressing a public gathering in Assam, accusing the party of prioritising electoral gains over the state’s security and identity. Speaking after inaugurating the redeveloped Mahpurush Srimanta Sankardeva Abirbhav Kshetra at Batadrawa Than in Nagaon district, Shah said illegal infiltration had been ignored for years and was allowed to grow because of vote-bank politics.

The Home Minister asserted that unchecked infiltration posed a serious threat to Assam’s land, people, and cultural heritage. He alleged that previous governments failed to act decisively, allowing demographic and social pressures to build up in border regions. In contrast, he said, the Bharatiya Janata Party-led government had taken a firm stand to protect national borders and regional identity.

Highlighting the Centre’s approach, Shah said the Modi government was committed to identifying and removing illegal immigrants not only from Assam but from across the country. He added that strong measures were being taken to ensure internal security while simultaneously focusing on development and infrastructure growth in the Northeast.

Shah also underlined the BJP’s emphasis on preserving Assamese culture and traditions, stating that development and cultural protection must go hand in hand. According to him, projects linked to heritage, faith, and regional pride reflect the government’s respect for Assam’s historical and spiritual legacy.

With the Assam Assembly elections scheduled for 2026, the Home Minister appealed to the people to give the BJP another term. He said continued public support would allow the government to complete its mission of making Assam secure, prosperous, and free from illegal infiltration.
