Tamil Nadu BJP chief K. Annamalai issued an apology on Friday after facing criticism from the opposition for the release of a video by the state unit of the BJP. The video, which went viral on social media, showed the owner of the popular vegetarian restaurant chain Sree Annapoorna seeking forgiveness from Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman during a private conversation. The apology came in response to strong backlash, particularly from the Congress party, which accused the BJP of humiliating the business owner for raising concerns about GST.
In the video, Srinivasan, the owner of Sree Annapoorna, was seen discussing the complexities of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) system and requesting a simplified regime for businesses. The incident occurred during Finance Minister Sitharaman's visit to Coimbatore on September 11, where she met with local industrialists and hoteliers. Srinivasan, representing the Tamil Nadu Hotels Association, humorously highlighted issues with GST inconsistencies, particularly in the restaurant industry.
Annamalai's Apology and Opposition Reaction
Responding to the growing criticism, K. Annamalai took to social media on Friday to issue an apology. In his statement, Annamalai expressed regret over the video and apologized for the breach of privacy.
?I sincerely apologise for the actions of our functionaries who shared a private conversation between a respected business owner and our Hon. FM," Annamalai said in his post. He added that he had personally spoken to Srinivasan, the owner of the Annapoorna chain, to convey his regret over the incident.
?Annapoorna Srinivasan Anna is a pillar of Tamil Nadu?s business community, contributing significantly to the state?s and nation?s economic growth. I request everyone to lay the matter to rest with due respect," Annamalai further stated, urging that the incident be left behind.
Congress Criticism and Rahul Gandhi's Response
The video and subsequent apology prompted a scathing attack from Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, who took to social media to criticize Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman's response to the business owner?s request for simplified GST policies. Gandhi?s comments added fuel to the controversy, accusing the government of showing disrespect to small business owners.
?When the owner of a small business, like Annapoorna restaurant in Coimbatore, asks our public servants for a simplified GST regime, his request is met with arrogance and outright disrespect,? Rahul Gandhi wrote on X (formerly Twitter). He went on to contrast the treatment of small business owners with what he called the government?s favorable treatment of billionaires, stating, ?Yet, when a billionaire friend seeks to bend the rules, change the laws, or acquire national assets, Modi Ji rolls out the red carpet.?
Gandhi also referenced the struggles small business owners have faced in recent years, including demonetization, tax complications, and the impact of the GST system. ?Our small business owners have already endured the blows of demonetisation, an inaccessible banking system, tax extortion, and a disastrous GST. The last thing they deserve is further humiliation," he added.
The GST Concerns Raised by Srinivasan
During the event in Coimbatore, Srinivasan raised concerns over the inconsistent application of GST on various items in the restaurant industry. He humorously remarked that even computers were unable to process the various tax rates, leading to confusion for both business owners and customers.
One specific example he highlighted was the difference in GST for a bun and a cream-filled bun, which creates a tax disparity. ?The problem is that GST is applied differently to each item. For example, there is no GST on a bun, but if you add cream to it, GST becomes 18%. Because of this, customers request the bun and cream separately so they can apply it themselves to save money,? he explained.
His humorous remarks about the complexities of the GST system were well received during the event but later became the subject of controversy when the Tamil Nadu BJP posted a video showing him apologizing to Sitharaman. The video sparked outrage, with many on social media mocking the finance minister and the government for their handling of the situation.
