Following a disappointing performance in the Lok Sabha elections in Uttar Pradesh, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is seeking to identify the reasons behind its significant loss of seats. The party, which fell short of securing a majority on its own, is now in the process of seeking detailed reports from candidates and the Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh (RSS) to pinpoint specific reasons for the electoral defeat.
State BJP president Bhupendra Chaudhary has formed an internal committee to investigate the causes behind the dramatic reduction in seats from 63 to 33. Although the party headquarters in the state capital appears calm on the surface, the primary topic of discussion among party officials is the substantial seat loss.
One of the most disappointing defeats for the BJP was in the Faizabad Lok Sabha constituency, a key area of saffron politics linked to the temple town of Ayodhya. Candidates like Sanjeev Balyan in Muzaffarnagar and Lallu Singh in Ayodhya have started to express their concerns about the reasons behind their losses. Balyan has attributed his defeat to former party MLA Sangeet Som, while Lallu Singh's supporters blame the state government?s land acquisition projects for the New Ayodhya Township.
Three road-widening projects in Ayodhya, which led to the demolition of houses and shops, have also been cited as significant factors in the BJP?s loss in the temple town. "A booth-wise list is being prepared, comprising villages where land is being acquired for the New Ayodhya Township project and other areas. Soon, reasons for the loss will be forwarded to the state leadership of the party," said a senior BJP leader from Ayodhya.
In the Shravasti Lok Sabha constituency, poor coordination between party officials in Balrampur and Shravasti is being blamed for the defeat. This constituency covers both districts. "Caste barriers and infighting in the local unit of the party led to the defeat," commented a BJP leader from Shravasti.
BJP spokesperson Ashok Pandey stated, "The party will review the loss of every seat. Reports from candidates will be solicited, and the party will also conduct its own assessment." Regarding the blame game between Sanjeev Balyan and Sangeet Som, Pandey remarked that such issues tend to arise when a candidate is defeated.
Additionally, RSS pracharaks will prepare region-wise reports and send them to senior office-bearers of the organization to aid in the overall analysis of the electoral performance.
