A major political confrontation is unfolding in West Bengal as Trinamool Congress leader Mamata Banerjee firmly refused to resign following her party’s electoral setback, asserting that the outcome does not reflect the true will of the people.
Refuses to Step Down
Speaking after the results, Banerjee made it clear she has no intention of vacating the Chief Minister’s post. “No one can force me to resign… I will not go to Raj Bhavan,” she said, insisting that while official numbers may show defeat, her party retains what she described as a “moral victory.”
Questions Over Election Process
Banerjee alleged serious irregularities during counting, claiming that results in multiple constituencies were manipulated. She described the election as a “black chapter,” arguing that the process was designed to weaken her party’s position.
Sharp Attack on Election Commission
The TMC chief launched a direct attack on the Election Commission of India, accusing it of bias and undermining democratic norms. She also questioned the functioning of electronic voting machines, raising doubts about technical aspects of the polling process.
Allegations of Administrative Manipulation
Banerjee further claimed that the administrative system was altered ahead of the polls, with key officials being transferred and law enforcement actions carried out in a politically motivated manner. According to her, these moves impacted the fairness of the election environment.
Targets BJP Leadership
Escalating her criticism, Banerjee accused the Bharatiya Janata Party of working in coordination with the poll body. She alleged that the election was not just a contest between parties but a larger battle against institutional machinery.
Claims of Voter List Irregularities
Raising another serious concern, she alleged discrepancies in voter rolls, claiming that millions of names were either removed or added without transparency. She pointed to legal interventions that restored some names but questioned the overall integrity of the process.
Focus Shifts to Opposition Unity
Despite the setback, Banerjee indicated that her immediate priority would be strengthening ties within the opposition alliance. She said leaders from the INDIA bloc, including Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi, had reached out to her in support.
Positions Herself as ‘Common Citizen’
Highlighting her next steps, Banerjee stated that she would continue public service without holding office. She described herself as a “free bird,” emphasizing her long-standing political journey and commitment to the people.
