Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge on Thursday declared that he would resign if the land grab allegations leveled against him by BJP MP Anurag Thakur were proven true. Kharge, who is also the Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha, accused Thakur of damaging his reputation and demanded that he either prove his claims or step down.
The controversy erupted after Anurag Thakur’s remarks in Lok Sabha during the debate on the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2025. Thakur accused the Congress and opposition parties of misusing Waqf properties as a "vote bank ATM", alleging that the boards had become a "hub of corruption." He further claimed that the proposed bill would be the "last nail in the coffin of Congress’s appeasement politics."
Kharge strongly refuted the allegations, stating, "These wild accusations are meant to tarnish my image. If they are true, I will resign. But if not, Anurag Thakur must step down."
