Counting of votes across five key regions—West Bengal (294 seats), Tamil Nadu (234 seats), Assam (126 seats), Kerala (140 seats) and Puducherry (30 seats)—has revealed a rapidly evolving political landscape, with early trends pointing toward major shifts in several states.

In West Bengal, the Bharatiya Janata Party has surged ahead dramatically, leading in over 160–170 seats in early rounds, crossing the crucial majority mark of 148 in multiple trend projections. This marks a significant departure from previous elections, where the All India Trinamool Congress had dominated the state. The contest, however, remains sensitive in high-profile constituencies like Bhabanipur, where Mamata Banerjee is locked in a direct battle with Suvendu Adhikari. The scale of BJP’s lead suggests a potential political realignment, although final outcomes will depend on later counting rounds.

Tamil Nadu is witnessing one of the most unexpected developments of this election cycle. Actor-turned-politician Vijay has propelled his party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, past the 100-seat mark, making it the single largest party in early trends. In a 234-member Assembly where the majority mark stands at 118, TVK’s performance has disrupted the long-standing dominance of both the DMK and AIADMK alliances. With leads spread across urban and rural regions, the party’s rise signals a structural shift in Tamil Nadu politics.

In Assam, the BJP-led alliance appears set to retain power comfortably. Early projections show the alliance nearing 95–100 seats in the 126-member Assembly, well above the required majority of 64. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma is also maintaining a strong lead in his constituency, reinforcing the party’s hold across urban, semi-urban, and rural segments.

Kerala, on the other hand, is witnessing a competitive contest. The Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) has taken an early lead, crossing the majority mark of 70 seats in several projections, while the ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF) trails but remains within striking distance. The 140-seat Assembly continues to show tight margins in multiple constituencies, making it one of the closest contests among the five regions.

In the Union Territory of Puducherry, the NDA has established a clear advantage, leading in over 20 seats in the 30-member Assembly, comfortably above the halfway mark of 16. This positions the alliance strongly to retain control.

Overall, the early trends from the 2026 Assembly elections indicate a mix of continuity and disruption. While the BJP is making major gains in West Bengal and consolidating its position in Assam and Puducherry, Tamil Nadu is witnessing a political upheaval with the emergence of TVK. Kerala remains a battleground with a closely contested race. As counting progresses, these numbers will determine whether the early leads translate into decisive mandates or tighter finishes across states.
