A tragic incident from Goa has intensified conversations around academic pressure and competitive examinations after a 17-year-old Class 12 science student was found dead at his residence in Nessai late Tuesday night.
Police officials said the teenager is suspected to have died by suicide. A preliminary investigation reportedly revealed a note in which the student spoke about prolonged mental stress linked to studies and examination pressure.
Note Mentions Emotional Exhaustion and Academic Burden
According to officials familiar with the probe, the student had allegedly written about struggling to cope with academic expectations over the past two years.
The note reportedly referred to emotional fatigue, pressure related to competitive exams and difficulties balancing studies with hockey, a sport he actively pursued.
Investigators said the teenager also expressed reluctance towards continuing with competitive entrance examinations.
NEET UG Cancellation Under Scanner During Investigation
Authorities stated that they have not officially established a direct connection between the student’s death and the cancellation of NEET UG 2026. However, police indicated that the recent development may have further intensified the emotional strain the teenager was already facing.
The cancellation of the medical entrance examination had triggered widespread reactions among students and parents across the country earlier this week.
Arvind Kejriwal Reacts to Incident
Reacting to the tragedy, Arvind Kejriwal described the incident as heartbreaking and questioned accountability over issues surrounding the examination process.
“The suicide by a 17-year-old student in Goa due to cancellation of the NEET exam is heartbreaking. Who is responsible for the loss of this young life? Will action be taken against those at the top, who are the ones actually responsible for this paper leak?” Kejriwal said.
He also stated that he planned to meet the bereaved family to offer condolences.
Family and Neighbours Discovered Teen Inside Locked Room
Police said the incident came to light late Tuesday night after family members noticed that a room in the house had remained locked from inside for an unusually long time.
Before authorities reached the location, relatives and neighbours reportedly used spare keys to enter the room, where the teenager was found unconscious.
