Tejashwi Yadav Demands 'Martyr' Status For All Fallen Military Personnel, Including Anti-Naxal Operations

In a strongly-worded appeal aimed at honoring India's uniformed heroes, Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader and former Deputy Chief Minister of Bihar, Tejashwi Yadav, has urged the central government to officially recognize all military personnel who lose their lives in service as 'martyrs' — regardless of where or how they are killed in the line of duty.

Speaking to the media in Patna on Tuesday, Yadav said, "We would like to request the Home Minister that all military forces be granted the status of 'martyr' (shaheed). Whether they are martyred while fighting Naxals or standing guard at our borders, our military personnel deserve to be officially recognized as martyrs."

The RJD leader's remarks come amid growing national sentiment over the recognition and compensation given to soldiers and paramilitary personnel who die in action. Currently, the status of ‘martyr’ is not officially recognized by the Government of India, although the term is widely used in media and public discourse. The government instead uses terms like "battle casualty" or "operational casualty" for administrative purposes.
