Violence erupted in Nashik’s Kathe Galli area late Tuesday night, leaving several police officers injured and escalating tensions ahead of a planned demolition of an illegal religious structure. The unrest occurred just hours before the Nashik Municipal Corporation, with heavy police protection, initiated the demolition drive in the early hours of Wednesday.
The chaos began around midnight following a power outage in the region. Rumors surrounding the disputed dargah site quickly spread, leading to a gathering of over 400 people who began hurling stones at police forces stationed near the structure. According to officials, several vehicles were damaged, and at least four to five police personnel were injured in the incident. The injured officers were rushed to the hospital for medical treatment.
TV9 Marathi reported that the mob grew in size despite the presence of a strong police contingent, prompting additional reinforcements from neighboring divisions. In anticipation of potential resistance, more than 500 police personnel were already stationed in the area, working to ensure order as the demolition operation progressed.
The dispute revolves around a dargah that the Nashik Municipal Corporation had declared illegal after a court ruling. Authorities issued a final notice to the dargah trust on April 1, directing them to voluntarily remove the structure by April 15 or face forced demolition. With the deadline passing without compliance, the municipal teams, backed by security forces, proceeded with the operation on Tuesday.
The area surrounding the dargah was sealed off with barricades, limiting access to civilians within a 100-meter radius. Officials confirmed that the demolition operation was set to be completed by Tuesday afternoon.
This latest unrest is not the first time the region has experienced tensions. A previous attempt to demolish the structure had also led to clashes, prompting religious leaders to request more time for resolution. Authorities had temporarily halted the demolition, but due to continued non-compliance from the trust, the administration resumed its legal course.
To manage the situation, the police have altered traffic routes around Kathe Galli and are closely monitoring the developments. Law enforcement assured the public that the demolition is being carried out in strict accordance with judicial orders.
Investigations are underway, with authorities reviewing CCTV footage to identify those responsible for the stone-pelting. Additional security forces have been deployed to prevent further disturbances in the area. Officials emphasized that the operation is conducted in line with the law and judicial instructions.
