In a compelling address during an orientation program for newly elected Rajya Sabha members at Parliament House, Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankhar highlighted the critical responsibility of Parliament in preserving the Constitution and safeguarding democracy. Held on Saturday, Dhankhar?s remarks served as a potent reminder of the pivotal role MPs play in upholding democratic values, particularly during times of crisis.

Dhankhar, who also serves as the chairman of Rajya Sabha, emphasized the gravity of the MPs' role, stating, "If there is any crisis in democracy, if democratic values are attacked, your role is decisive." His message underscored the responsibility of Parliament members to act as the foremost defenders of democratic principles.

Reaffirming the sanctity of parliamentary procedures, Dhankhar declared that Parliament must function with complete autonomy and authority. "Parliament is supreme for its procedure, for its proceedings," he asserted. "Whatever happens inside the Parliament, no one has authority to interfere except the Chair. It cannot be of the executive nor of any other institution."

Dhankhar also expressed concern over the current conduct of some members, criticizing what he termed the "hit and run" strategy. This approach involves engaging with the media before and after brief House appearances, often without attending to the full spectrum of parliamentary debate. He cautioned against the rise of personal attacks and disruptive behaviors designed to cater to specific interests, warning, "There can be no greater divisive activity than this."

Reflecting on India's democratic journey, Dhankhar recalled the Emergency period as a "painful, heart-wrenching, and darkest chapter in Indian democracy," where fundamental rights were violated and leaders were unjustly imprisoned. Despite acknowledging Parliament?s overall performance, he expressed concern over the current use of disruptions as political tools.

"This is an attack on the basic spirit of democracy. To harm dignity is to shake the roots of democracy," Dhankhar warned. He concluded by condemning the trend of using disturbances and disruptions as political weapons, stressing that such actions undermine the prestige of Parliament and the nation.
