In response to the devastating terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, the United States has issued a stark warning to its citizens, advising them to avoid traveling to the region due to the ongoing security concerns. The deadly attack on April 22 left 26 people dead, primarily tourists, marking one of the most lethal assaults in the area since the 2019 Pulwama attack.

The U.S. Department of State updated its travel advisory, cautioning citizens that “terrorist attacks and violent civil unrest are possible in the union territory of Jammu and Kashmir.” It further emphasized the unpredictability of violence in the region, particularly in areas such as Srinagar, Gulmarg, and Pahalgam, which have seen targeted attacks in the past. The advisory specifically highlighted that violence is common along the Line of Control (LOC) between India and Pakistan, urging U.S. nationals to avoid travel near this border region.

The advisory also banned U.S. government personnel from traveling to Jammu and Kashmir, reiterating the high level of risk posed by the volatile security situation. The U.S. State Department added that foreign tourists are restricted from visiting certain areas along the LOC, which remains a highly sensitive zone.

The attack, claimed by The Resistance Front (TRF), an affiliate of the Pakistan-based militant group Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), has raised alarms both domestically and internationally. Indian authorities are intensifying their efforts to capture the perpetrators of the assault while bolstering security measures across the Kashmir Valley.

In light of these developments, the U.S. urged its citizens to stay informed about the security situation and avoid areas within 10 kilometers of the India-Pakistan border due to the risk of armed conflict.
