US Hits Back: White House Targets India’s 'Unfair' Tariffs With Reciprocal Trade Measures

The White House has intensified its stance on global trade, singling out India for what it calls "unfair" tariffs on American goods. With new reciprocal tariffs set to take effect on April 2, the Biden administration is taking a firm stand against countries imposing high charges on US exports.

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt on Monday highlighted India’s 100% tariff on American agricultural products, calling it a major barrier for US businesses. “These countries have been ripping off our nation for far too long,” Leavitt said. “It’s time for reciprocity.” She stressed that the new measures would ensure a level playing field, stating that President Biden is committed to making “historic changes” starting Wednesday.

The press secretary compared India’s tariffs with those imposed by other nations, pointing out a 50% tariff on American dairy from the European Union, a 700% tariff on American rice from Japan, and nearly 300% on American butter and cheese from Canada. She argued that such high charges have left US businesses struggling to compete, preventing American products from reaching key global markets. To support her claims, Leavitt presented a detailed chart outlining the tariff disparities, with India’s levies receiving particular attention.

Former US President Donald Trump had previously called such tariffs “temporary” and “small,” but insisted that the upcoming reciprocal tariffs would be a “game-changer” for the American economy. In February, Trump had stated, “No more or no less… They charge us a tax or tariff, and we charge the exact same tax or tariff.”

Leavitt did not disclose specifics of the new measures but assured that the administration’s trade advisors had devised a plan to ensure fairness in global trade. She reiterated that President Biden’s approach prioritizes American interests and that the new tariffs will be enforced with immediate effect.

“The President will make the announcement on Wednesday,” Leavitt concluded, signaling a significant shift in US trade policy that could impact global economic relations.
