US President Donald Trump on Tuesday sharply criticized China and India, accusing them of fueling the ongoing conflict in Ukraine by continuing to purchase Russian oil. Speaking at the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), Trump said, “China and India are the primary funders of the ongoing war by continuing to purchase Russian oil.”

Trump’s hour-long address at the General Debate of the UNGA largely focused on global conflicts, with Ukraine dominating the discussion. His comments came at a time when Washington has been taking a tougher stance on India’s trade practices, particularly its oil imports from Russia.

Just weeks before his UNGA speech, Trump’s administration imposed steep tariffs on Indian imports. A 25% levy announced in July was followed by an additional 25% duty, bringing the total tariff on Indian goods to a staggering 50% — among the highest globally. The tariffs officially came into effect on August 27.

The tariff escalation unfolded despite ongoing trade negotiations between New Delhi and Washington. India and the US have so far held five rounds of talks for a potential trade deal, though the proposed sixth round scheduled for August was postponed. Both sides have also been exploring an interim arrangement to ease tensions.

India, however, has consistently pushed back against US pressure, especially over demands to open up its sensitive agricultural and dairy markets. Earlier this year, in March, both nations began talks on a broader Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA). The aim is to finalize the first stage of the pact by October-November 2025, with an emphasis on making the deal “just, balanced, and mutually beneficial.”
