Massive traffic jams choked several key routes connecting Delhi with Noida, Ghaziabad, and Gurugram on Monday morning as commuters bore the brunt of road closures and diversions enforced in view of US Vice President JD Vance’s first visit to India.
Vance landed in Delhi around 9:30 am and is scheduled to attend several high-profile engagements, prompting Delhi Traffic Police to issue an advisory and implement special traffic arrangements across the capital.
Noida’s Sector 62, the DND Flyway, and the Delhi-Meerut Expressway witnessed bumper-to-bumper traffic, with commuters reporting being stuck for up to an hour or more.
“Insane Traffic Near Sector 62, Noida. 8 km stretch has been overloaded with traffic for more than 45 mins now at Delhi - Meerut NH,” wrote a commuter on social media platform X.
Another user said, “Very heavy traffic on Delhi Meerut Expressway on service road towards Delhi from Crossings / Vijay Nagar. Standstill for last 30 minutes, haven't moved an inch.”
In Delhi, areas such as Dhaula Kuan, Lajpat Nagar, Mahipalpur, Vasant Kunj, and Rajouri Garden were similarly congested during peak office hours.
Delhi Traffic Police, citing a “special event,” had earlier announced a detailed advisory enforcing road closures and diversions from 9 am to 11 am, 11 am to 2 pm, and 6 pm to 9 pm on Monday.
As per the advisory, no vehicle parking was allowed on Sardar Patel Marg, Gurugram Road, Parade Road, Thimmaiya Marg, and Air Force Road. Any vehicles found violating this were to be towed and impounded at Kalibari Mandir Marg traffic pit, opposite the Bhairon temple.
The gridlock may have also been aggravated due to Vance’s scheduled visit to Akshardham Temple, which lies along a key stretch connecting Delhi to Noida and Ghaziabad.
