Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Tuesday shared a personal story from her childhood, recalling how a woman once scolded her father, former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, during his visit to Amethi. Speaking at an election rally, Priyanka said, “When I was 10–12 years old, I saw a woman in Amethi scold my father. She said, ‘Tum Rajiv Bhaiya toh ho hamare, Pradhan Mantri hoge lekin aapne bola tha hamare yaha nal lagaoge par lagaya nahi abhi tak, hum dobara vote nahi denge aapko.’”

She emphasized that despite being the Prime Minister, Rajiv Gandhi listened patiently to the woman, who spoke without fear — something Priyanka said is missing in India today. “That woman was not scared. But today, everyone is forced to live in fear. If you ask for your rights, you know the police will beat you, and the administration will silence you,” she said.

Priyanka Gandhi underlined that India’s democracy was built on Mahatma Gandhi’s vision, where the people hold supreme power, and leaders are accountable to them. She lamented that this democratic spirit is now being undermined by fear and repression.
