Smriti Irani: 'Rahul Gandhi's Politics Has Changed After He Thinks He Tasted Success'

In a candid critique of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, BJP leader and former Union Minister Smriti Irani suggested that Gandhi is deliberately engaging in calculated political manoeuvres aimed at specific demographics. Speaking on a recent podcast, Irani claimed that the Congress scion is aware of the impact of his actions, particularly when discussing sensitive issues like caste or making symbolic gestures, such as wearing a white T-shirt in Parliament.

"When he talks about caste, when he wears a white T-shirt in Parliament, he's aware of what kind of message it sends to the youth," Irani remarked, highlighting Gandhi's intentional efforts to appeal to particular sections of the population. She warned against underestimating Gandhi's strategies, noting, "So we shouldn't be under the misconception about his actions ? whether you find them good, bad, or childish ? they are a different kind of politics."

Irani also criticized the Congress party's past attempts to engage in "soft Hindutva," referencing Gandhi's temple visits during election seasons. According to Irani, these efforts were largely ineffective and met with skepticism from voters. "Rahul Gandhi did not get any traction from his temple visits. It became the butt of jokes. Some people found it deceitful. So when this strategy did not work, they switched to caste issues to gain traction," she said.

The former Amethi MP argued that Gandhi's current political success is an evolution from these earlier, unsuccessful tactics. She accused Gandhi of using provocative statements to maintain his relevance in the political arena, citing his recent remarks about the lack of Dalit or Adivasi contestants in Miss India as an example. "He knows that Miss India has nothing to do with forming the government, but he still says things like that on social media. Because it makes the headlines," Irani asserted.

Irani questioned the sincerity of Gandhi's ideology, suggesting that his public statements are more strategic than heartfelt. "These are not his beliefs, this is all just part of a strategy," she concluded, casting doubt on the authenticity of Gandhi's political moves.

Irani's comments reflect the ongoing rivalry between the two leaders, especially following her victory over Gandhi in the Amethi constituency during the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. As the political landscape continues to evolve, her remarks underscore the BJP's efforts to challenge Gandhi's influence and credibility.
