A young Indian diplomat, Petal Gahlot, has drawn global attention after delivering a firm and uncompromising rebuttal to Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA). Representing India in the Right of Reply, Gahlot’s sharp words reflected New Delhi’s unwavering stand against cross-border terrorism.
Taking on Sharif’s claims of peace, Gahlot stated, “If he is indeed sincere, the pathway is clear. Pakistan must immediately shut down all terrorist camps and hand over to us the terrorists wanted in India.” She further called out the irony of Pakistan “lecturing the global community on faith while fostering intolerance and bigotry within its own borders.”
A Diplomat with Strong Foundations
According to SheThePeople, Gahlot’s journey into diplomacy began with a solid academic base. She completed her undergraduate degree in Political Science from St. Xavier’s College, Mumbai, followed by a Master’s in Political Science from Lady Shri Ram College, Delhi University. This academic training prepared her for the nuanced and competitive world of international diplomacy.
In 2015, she joined the Indian Foreign Service (IFS), and has since handled several critical assignments. Currently, she serves as the First Secretary at India’s Permanent Mission to the UN in New York, representing India in global discussions on peace and security. Before this, she worked as Under Secretary in the European West Division of the Ministry of External Affairs and also served overseas at Indian missions in Paris and San Francisco.
The “Guitar Diplomat”
Beyond diplomacy, Gahlot is admired for her artistic side. Known as the “Guitar Diplomat,” she has charmed social media with her musical talent. Her rendition of the Italian resistance classic Bella Ciao and her cover of Lost On You by LP won her wide appreciation.
A Rising Voice for India
Petal Gahlot exemplifies the new generation of Indian diplomats who blend professional rigor with a modern and approachable persona. Her powerful address at the UNGA has not only reiterated India’s clear position on terrorism but also established her as a confident voice of conviction on the global stage.
