In a landmark decision aimed at strengthening the quality of the lower judiciary, the Supreme Court of India has ruled that only those with a minimum of three years of practice as lawyers will be eligible to apply for posts of Civil Judge (Junior Division).

A bench comprising Chief Justice of India B.R. Gavai and Justices A.G. Masih and K. Vinod Chandran delivered the verdict, underscoring that the appointment of fresh law graduates as judicial officers has caused "several problems" in the system.

"Practical courtroom experience is essential to ensure sound judgment and effective case handling," the bench observed. "Hence, the requirement of three years of legal practice must be made mandatory for all aspirants seeking entry into the judicial service."
