The Rajasthan Assembly witnessed high political drama as six Congress MLAs spent the night in the Well of the House after being suspended during the budget session on Friday. The legislators—Govind Singh Dotasra, Ramkesh Meena, Amin Kagzi, Zakir Hussain Gesawat, Hakeem Ali Khan, and Sanjay Kumar Jatav—were suspended following a heated uproar over remarks made about former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.
Tensions flared during Question Hour when Social Justice and Empowerment Minister Avinash Gehlot remarked that the Opposition had "once again named a scheme after their dadi," referring to Indira Gandhi. This triggered strong objections from Congress leaders, including Leader of Opposition Tika Ram Jully. The protests led to multiple adjournments, and as the ruckus continued when proceedings resumed at 4 PM, Chief Whip Jogeshwar Garg moved a proposal to suspend the Congress MLAs. Speaker Vasudev Devnani promptly approved the suspension.
Refusing to back down, the suspended MLAs, along with their party colleagues, staged an overnight sit-in protest inside the Assembly. Rajasthan Congress President Govind Singh Dotasra and Deputy Leader of Opposition Ramkesh Meena, both among the suspended, led the agitation.
Former deputy CM Sachin Pilot condemned the suspension, calling it an attempt by the BJP government to suppress the Opposition. "A minister in the BJP government made an objectionable comment on former PM Indira Gandhi. Congress MLAs, including the Leader of Opposition, protested, and now six of them are suspended. It is clear that the BJP does not want the Assembly to function and is using such statements to create chaos," Pilot said on X.
