Congress leader and Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, has finally addressed the outcomes of the recent Jammu and Kashmir and Haryana Assembly elections. In a statement released via social media, Gandhi expressed gratitude to the people of Jammu and Kashmir for electing the INDIA alliance government in the region while also acknowledging the party's significant defeat in Haryana.
The results, announced on Tuesday, prompted a wave of speculation regarding the silence of Rahul Gandhi and his sister, Priyanka Gandhi, on the contrasting outcomes in both states. On Wednesday, Rahul took to X (formerly Twitter), breaking his silence and thanking supporters while acknowledging the unexpected setback in Haryana.
?A heartfelt thank you to the people of Jammu and Kashmir ? the victory of INDIA in the state is a victory for the Constitution, a victory for democratic pride. We are analysing the unexpected results in Haryana. We will bring the complaints coming in from various assembly constituencies to the attention of the Election Commission,? said Gandhi in his post.
He continued by expressing appreciation for the support in Haryana: "A sincere thank you to all the people of Haryana for their support, and to our brave and tireless workers for their relentless efforts. We will continue this struggle for rights, for social and economic justice, and for truth, raising your voice louder."
The Congress party managed to secure 6 seats in Jammu and Kashmir, but the real surprise was the party?s underperformance in Haryana, where they won only 37 seats. This was a significant blow considering that several exit polls had predicted a Congress victory and the formation of the government in the state.
Following the declaration of the results, the Congress party lodged a formal complaint with the Election Commission, citing delays in updating the official results on the Commission's website. The party has raised concerns over irregularities in the counting process in several constituencies, and this matter will likely be pursued further.
As the Congress leadership reflects on the outcome in Haryana, the party has pledged to continue its fight for social and economic justice, a key theme of its campaign. Gandhi?s statement aims to reassure both party workers and supporters that Congress remains steadfast in its commitment to addressing grievances and pushing for accountability in the electoral process.
The defeat in Haryana, however, marks a crucial moment for the party, as it seeks to regain ground in one of the key battleground states ahead of the upcoming general elections.
