Punjab Assembly Passes Rs 20,000-Crore Relief Resolution, Slams Centre For ‘Failure To Act’ On Flood Crisis

The Punjab Assembly on Monday unanimously approved a resolution demanding a special financial package of ₹20,000 crore from the Centre to support farmers, rebuild infrastructure, and restore livelihoods in flood-ravaged regions of the state. The resolution also came down heavily on the BJP-led Union government, accusing it of showing a “lack of response and failure” in sanctioning urgent relief.

The House further pressed for the immediate release of ₹1,600 crore in relief funds already announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Notably, the two BJP MLAs were absent when the resolution — first moved on Friday — was passed on the concluding day of a two-day special session dedicated to the state’s flood crisis. The devastating floods, triggered by swollen Sutlej, Ravi and Beas rivers along with torrential rains, have left vast parts of Punjab reeling.

Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann declared that the state government will begin distributing relief from October 15, with ministers tasked to oversee the process on the ground. Compensation of ₹20,000 per acre will be provided to farmers facing 75% to 100% crop damage across affected districts.

The session also witnessed sharp political sparring. Leader of Opposition Partap Singh Bajwa accused the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government of misleading people on flood preparedness. He cited a July 22, 2025, letter from the Water Resources Department that contradicted earlier Assembly claims by AAP minister Barinder Goyal that all flood mitigation works had been completed by July 14. Bajwa alleged that even by mid-monsoon, critical works had not begun in Anandpur Sahib, Ropar, SAS Nagar, Patiala, Pathankot, and Ferozepur.

Finance Minister Harpal Cheema hit back, accusing Bajwa of making baseless charges while pursuing “self-interest” in land dealings.
