Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday thanked former US President Donald Trump for his Diwali greetings and phone call, highlighting the enduring partnership between India and the United States. Modi described both nations as “two great democracies” and reaffirmed their commitment to global peace.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), PM Modi wrote: “Thank you, President Trump, for your phone call and warm Diwali greetings. On this festival of lights, may our two great democracies continue to illuminate the world with hope and stand united against terrorism in all its forms.”
The exchange came as Trump hosted a Diwali celebration at the White House, sending festive wishes to the people of India and the Indian-American community. Speaking at the event, Trump recalled his conversation with PM Modi: “I just spoke to your Prime Minister today. Had a great conversation. We talked about trade... and no wars with Pakistan and India. That was a very, very good thing. He's a great person and a great friend of mine.”
During the ceremony, Trump lit traditional diyas, symbolising the victory of light over darkness. He emphasised Diwali’s universal message: “It’s the victory of light over darkness, knowledge over ignorance, and good over evil. The flame of the Diya reminds us to pursue wisdom, diligence, and gratitude.”
