Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in London for a two-day official visit, expected to mark a new chapter in India-UK ties. The visit is being seen as a turning point in bilateral relations, especially with a major Free Trade Agreement (FTA) likely to be signed during his stay — a landmark development in global trade diplomacy.

On arrival at Heathrow Airport, Prime Minister Modi was warmly welcomed by UK Foreign Office Minister for the Indo-Pacific Catherine West, Indian High Commissioner to the UK Vikram Doraiswami, and British High Commissioner to India Lindy Cameron. The high-profile reception signals the importance both countries attach to this visit.

Taking to social media, PM Modi wrote, “Landed in London. This visit will go a long way in advancing the economic partnership between our nations. The focus will be on furthering prosperity, growth and boosting job creation for our people. A strong India-UK friendship is essential for global progress.”

The centrepiece of the visit is the anticipated signing of the long-pending Free Trade Agreement between India and the UK. Negotiations have been underway since 2022 and the deal, once concluded, will be India’s first major FTA with a developed nation in over a decade. It is expected to unlock significant trade opportunities, enhance investment flows, and reduce tariff barriers across multiple sectors. The FTA will become operational following approvals from both the UK Parliament and India’s Union Cabinet.

Prime Minister Modi is set to hold formal talks with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer. The two leaders will discuss an extensive range of issues under the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership framework. The agenda includes collaboration on trade, technology, climate action, education, healthcare, defence, and deeper cultural and people-to-people ties.

PM Modi will also call on King Charles III at Buckingham Palace, marking an important diplomatic engagement during the visit. This is PM Modi’s fourth visit to the UK since taking office — after previous visits in 2015, 2018, and 2021 (for COP26 in Glasgow).

The Indian diaspora in the UK gave PM Modi an enthusiastic welcome, with groups of students, professionals, and community leaders gathering outside his hotel and near public events. Many waved Indian flags and held banners thanking him for what they described as a "transformative economic vision." Modi acknowledged their support, posting: “Touched by the warm welcome from the Indian community in the UK. Their affection and passion towards India's progress is truly heartening.”
