In the wake of a temporary halt in cross-border hostilities between India and Pakistan, top Opposition leaders have demanded an immediate special session of Parliament to address key national security developments, including the deadly Pahalgam terror strike, India’s military response through ‘Operation Sindoor’, and the US-brokered ceasefire announcement.
Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi and his Rajya Sabha counterpart Mallikarjun Kharge have jointly written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, pressing for urgent parliamentary debate on these issues of "national interest and international significance."
In his letter, Rahul Gandhi wrote: “It is crucial for the people and their representatives to discuss the Pahalgam terror attack, Operation Sindoor, and today’s ceasefire, first announced by US President Trump. This will also be an opportunity to demonstrate our collective resolve to meet the challenges ahead,” as quoted by PTI.
The call comes less than 24 hours after India and Pakistan agreed to suspend military actions following four intense days of aerial and artillery exchanges across the Line of Control and international border. The ceasefire, reportedly facilitated by US diplomatic backchannels, followed India's precision strikes on terror camps and military targets in Pakistan as part of ‘Operation Sindoor’.
Echoing Rahul Gandhi’s appeal, Kharge wrote in his own letter to PM Modi:
“In view of the latest developments, the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha has already written to you, reiterating the unanimous request of all Opposition parties for a special session of Parliament… to discuss the Pahalgam terror attack, Operation Sindoor, and the ceasefire announcements — first from Washington DC and later by the Governments of India and Pakistan.”
Kharge added: “As Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha, I am writing in support of this appeal. I trust you will agree.”
