The FBI is investigating a New Year's Day terror attack in the French Quarter of New Orleans, where a pickup truck plowed into a crowd, killing 15 people and injuring more than 30. The attack, which occurred amidst New Year?s celebrations and the lead-up to the Sugar Bowl college football game, has left the city shaken.

Details of the Incident

The incident took place early Wednesday morning when a pickup truck bypassed police barricades on Bourbon Street and rammed into revelers at around 3:15 a.m. The driver, identified as 42-year-old Shamsud-Din Bahar Jabbar, a U.S. citizen and Army veteran from Texas, was later apprehended after a shootout with police that left two officers injured. Both officers are in stable condition.

Evidence Points to Terrorism

The FBI has classified the attack as an act of terrorism. Investigators discovered an Islamic State flag on the truck?s trailer hitch and uncovered an arsenal of weapons, including firearms and pipe bombs, inside the vehicle. The pipe bombs were concealed in coolers and wired for remote detonation, with a remote control also found in the vehicle.

Assistant Special Agent Alethea Duncan of the FBI's New Orleans field office stated, ?We believe Jabbar did not act alone,? as surveillance footage revealed other individuals placing improvised explosive devices in the area.

Targeting Crowds During Festivities

Bourbon Street, a hub of New Orleans? New Year celebrations, turned into a scene of devastation as the truck careened into the crowd. Thousands of people had gathered for the festivities and the Sugar Bowl, which has since been postponed.

Police Commissioner Anne Kirkpatrick described Jabbar?s actions as "hell-bent on creating carnage," stating that he aimed to maximize casualties.

Broader Concerns Over Vehicle Attacks

The attack highlights the growing concern over the use of vehicles in mass violence. Such incidents, difficult to predict and defend against, have been increasing globally. Just last month, a similar attack in Magdeburg, Germany, claimed the lives of four women and a 9-year-old boy.

Community in Mourning

New Orleans residents and visitors are grappling with the tragedy. Authorities are urging vigilance while continuing their investigation into potential accomplices and any links Jabbar may have had to terrorist organizations.
