On the solemn and proud occasion of the 26th Kargil Vijay Diwas, Chief of Army Staff General Upendra Dwivedi paid heartfelt tributes to the soldiers and families of the 1999 Kargil War, reaffirming the Indian Army’s commitment to defend the nation with honor, courage, and evolving strength.

Addressing a commemorative event at the Kargil War Memorial in Dras, General Dwivedi said, “On this sacred occasion, I sincerely thank the parents, veer naaris, and families of the Kargil war heroes. You gave your valiant sons to the nation; your courage, patience, and sacrifice are an inspiration to us all. Today, the entire nation respectfully salutes your unparalleled contribution and unwavering patriotism.”

Reflecting on the intense battle fought on the rugged icy heights of Kargil, he added, “In that war, the Indian Army drove out Pakistani soldiers and infiltrators from the snowy mountains and hoisted the Tricolour on those icy peaks.” The victory, he said, was not just military but a testament to India’s unity, resilience, and determination.

Highlighting the modernisation and transformation of the armed forces since Kargil, General Dwivedi noted, “Today’s Indian Army is not only successfully facing current challenges, but is also rapidly progressing each day as a dynamic, modern, and future-ready force.”

The Army Chief’s remarks come at a time when India is making rapid strides in defence innovation, technology adoption, and operational preparedness across all terrains. His message served as both a tribute to past sacrifices and a vision for future readiness.

The event at Dras was attended by senior military officials, war veterans, families of martyred soldiers, and citizens from across the country. Ceremonial tributes, patriotic performances, and moments of silence marked the emotional tribute to the bravehearts who laid down their lives for the nation during Operation Vijay.
