Modi Receives Historic Welcome In Colombo As India, Sri Lanka Seal Landmark Defence And Energy Ties

In a moment rich with symbolism and diplomacy, Sri Lanka on Saturday accorded Prime Minister Narendra Modi an unprecedented ceremonial welcome at the iconic Independence Square in Colombo — a first-of-its-kind honour for any foreign leader. The grand reception, led by Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, marked a deepening of ties between the two nations as they move forward on key collaborations in energy, defence, and regional integration.

Modi arrived in Colombo on Friday evening after participating in the BIMSTEC Summit in Bangkok. The ceremonial welcome at Independence Square — the historical venue where Sri Lanka marks its independence from British rule — underscored the significance of the visit and the evolving strategic partnership between the neighbours.

“This visit is a reaffirmation of our commitment to a shared future and mutual prosperity,” said External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal in a social media post, highlighting the optimism surrounding the high-level engagement.

The leaders held one-on-one discussions followed by delegation-level talks, culminating in a series of landmark outcomes. Among the most notable is a first-ever Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on defence cooperation, which is expected to institutionalise joint military exercises, capacity-building programs, high-level exchanges, and potentially collaboration in the defence industry.

Crucially, the MoU signals a fresh chapter in bilateral defence ties, moving beyond the historical baggage of India’s intervention during Sri Lanka’s civil war via the Indian Peace Keeping Force (IPKF). In a gesture of remembrance and reconciliation, Modi is set to visit the IPKF Memorial in Colombo to pay tribute to the 1,155 Indian soldiers who lost their lives during the 1987–1990 mission.

Beyond defence, both sides are poised to announce nearly 10 key agreements, including an ambitious plan to interconnect their national power grids and develop an energy hub in Trincomalee in partnership with the United Arab Emirates (UAE). These initiatives align with India’s broader regional energy strategy and Sri Lanka’s efforts to position itself as a key node in South Asia’s energy corridor.

Modi’s visit is seen as a strong signal of India’s continued support for Sri Lanka’s post-crisis recovery and strategic autonomy, particularly in the face of mounting global geopolitical pressures.
