The BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) has registered a strong early lead in the Thiruvananthapuram Municipal Corporation elections, marking a significant moment in Kerala’s evolving political landscape. Preliminary figures released by the Kerala State Election Commission indicate that the NDA is ahead in 25 wards, placing it in a commanding position over the ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF), which is currently leading in 15 wards.
The Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) has also made a modest showing, securing leads in 10 wards according to early trends. The unfolding results suggest a three-cornered contest in the state capital, with the NDA emerging as the dominant force in the initial count.
If these trends hold, the outcome would represent a major political setback for the LDF, especially with Kerala heading toward Assembly elections next year. The civic poll results in the capital are being seen as an important barometer of urban voter sentiment ahead of the larger electoral battle that will also take place in states such as West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Assam, and the Union Territory of Puducherry.
The contrast with the previous local body elections is particularly striking. In the 2020 municipal polls, the LDF had swept the Thiruvananthapuram Municipal Corporation, securing a decisive majority. At that time, the NDA had also shown strength but remained behind the Left, while the UDF was limited to a smaller presence.
