In a major relief to taxpayers, the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) on Tuesday announced an extension of the due date for filing Income Tax Returns (ITRs) for the Assessment Year 2025-26. The earlier deadline of July 31 has now been pushed to September 15, 2025.
The decision, according to a statement issued by the CBDT, was taken in light of “structural and content revisions” made to the notified ITR forms for the current assessment year. “These changes are aimed at simplifying compliance, enhancing transparency, and enabling accurate reporting. However, they have necessitated additional time for system development, integration, and testing of the corresponding utilities,” the statement said.
The department also highlighted the issue of TDS (Tax Deducted at Source) credits, which are based on statements that were due to be filed by May 31. These credits are expected to begin reflecting only in early June, thereby narrowing the effective window for timely return filing. The extension, therefore, is seen as a necessary step to allow taxpayers adequate time to complete the filing process accurately.
“This extension will provide more time due to significant revisions in ITR forms, system development needs, and TDS credit reflections. It also ensures a smoother and more accurate filing experience for everyone,” the CBDT stated, adding that a formal notification to this effect will be issued soon.
