India-US Trade Talks Back On Track; Piyush Goyal To Visit Washington For Bilateral Deal

na

Discussions on strengthening the India-United States trade relationship are set to resume, with Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal expected to visit Washington DC soon to push forward negotiations on a long-pending Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA).

Negotiations for the BTA, which began in March 2025, had stalled in August 2025. The renewed momentum follows the recent visit of Assistant US Trade Representative Brendan Lynch to New Delhi for a fresh round of talks with Indian officials.

The resumption of dialogue comes against the backdrop of US President Donald Trump acknowledging the impact of tariffs on bilateral trade. Trump recently praised his partnership with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, stressing the importance of resolving trade frictions.

The objective of the talks, officials said, is to reach an early conclusion of the trade agreement, which would override the reciprocal tariffs recently imposed by the United States. Both sides are aiming for a framework that balances market access, tariff reduction, and stronger investment flows.
