During a sharp and pointed speech in the Lok Sabha on Tuesday, Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi accused Union Home Minister Amit Shah of deflecting responsibility for the recent Pahalgam terror attack and using emotional rhetoric to avoid answering tough questions. Gogoi said the nation expected accountability, not political blame games or selective history lessons.
Taking a jibe at Shah’s comments linking Opposition leaders to Pakistan, Gogoi said, “I went to Pakistan before Modi ji went there to eat biryani. I don’t know why he (Amit Shah) brought that up.” His remarks were aimed at dismissing what he called the BJP’s outdated narrative tactics used to target the Congress party.
Gogoi also questioned the government's silence on continued sporting ties with Pakistan despite its aggressive stance in Parliament. “Maybe Amit Shah ji would be in a better position to say why the BCCI is insisting on an India-Pakistan match. He would have much greater knowledge of why India-Pakistan cricket matches are happening,” he said, underlining the contradiction between government rhetoric and reality.
The Congress MP shifted the focus of the discussion back to the tragedy in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pahalgam, where 26 civilians were killed in a terror attack. He accused the Home Minister of hiding behind the heroism of the armed forces instead of accepting the Centre’s administrative failure.
“Today was the time to accept the failures of the present government. Instead, they went to the past. Amit Shah ji wanted to hide his failures behind the valour and the patriotism of the Indian Armed Forces,” Gogoi said.
In a powerful conclusion, he invoked the principle of moral responsibility. “The Home Minister should have accepted responsibility. He should have followed the principles of ‘Rajadharma’ for the failures of Pahalgam.”
