The abrupt resignation of Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar has triggered a storm of speculation in political circles, with Congress MP Vivek Tankha questioning the circumstances behind the unexpected move. Speaking to the media, Tankha said Dhankhar appeared “completely healthy” during the recent Monsoon session and hinted at possible pressure or displeasure from the ruling government.
“He was completely healthy. He conducted the Parliament in the same jovial mood. Something happened in the afternoon (on July 21) which has upset him... which may have also upset the government,” said Tankha, raising concerns about internal tensions that may have led to the decision.
Calling the resignation a “major loss” for the country, the Congress MP pointed out that crucial business was pending in the Rajya Sabha, including an impeachment motion against former Delhi High Court judge, Justice Yashwant Verma.
The impeachment proposal, reportedly linked to the discovery of large quantities of burnt ₹500 currency notes at Justice Verma’s official residence, was accepted by Dhankhar during the Monsoon session. As Chairman of the Rajya Sabha, Dhankhar directed the Secretary-General to take the necessary procedural steps to move the motion forward.
“There might have been some pressure on him to resign,” Tankha said, strongly suggesting that Dhankhar’s resignation may not have been entirely voluntary.
