Former Air Chief Marshal RKS Bhadauria, in a recent interview on the ANI podcast, addressed the ongoing political debate surrounding the Agniveer scheme, emphasizing the provision for reviews inherent in such policies. Bhadauria, who recently joined the BJP ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, highlighted that every scheme allows for periodic reviews, as stipulated by the Raksha Mantri.
Responding to queries regarding criticism from Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on aspects like "insurance vs compensation," Bhadauria indirectly criticized those outside the Defence Services for their concerns, stating, "The Defence Services are not worried; the concern lies with those who know little about our operational realities."
Acknowledging the potential for adjustments in the scheme, Bhadauria assured that reviews would be conducted to address any shortcomings. He clarified that under the Agniveer scheme, insurance amounts are disbursed initially, with additional gratia payments subject to review, a process consistent for both regular soldiers and Agniveer personnel.

Meanwhile, Rahul Gandhi, Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, continued to assail the BJP-led government, alleging discrepancies in compensating families of Agniveer personnel. Citing the case of Ajay Kumar, who lost his life in a landmine explosion earlier this year, Gandhi underscored the difference between compensation and insurance benefits, demanding accountability from Defence Minister Rajnath Singh.
In response to social media claims regarding delayed compensation for Ajay Kumar's family, the Indian Army clarified on X platform that Rs 98.39 lakhs had already been disbursed to the next of kin. The Army reiterated its respect for Ajay Kumar's sacrifice, noting that the funeral had been conducted with full military honors.
The controversy surrounding the Agniveer scheme continues to fuel political discourse, with stakeholders emphasizing the need for transparency and equitable support for military personnel and their families.
