A recent viral post on social media claimed that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) secured victories in 10 constituencies by margins of less than 500 votes and triumphed in over 100 other constituencies with differences of fewer than 1000 votes. However, these assertions have been debunked.
BM Sandeep, who identifies as a secretary for the All India Congress Committee (AICC), urged scrutiny of these figures on the social network X (formerly known as Twitter). He suggested that the actual number of constituencies won by the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) might be lower than reported.
An investigation into the official results from the Election Commission of India reveals that the claims are unfounded. Of the 240 BJP candidates who won, none achieved victory by a margin of fewer than 1000 votes, let alone 500 votes. The smallest winning margin for the BJP was in Jajpur, Odisha, where Rabindra Narayan Behera won by 1587 votes, according to a report by The Quint.
While there were narrow victories in constituencies such as Jaipur Rural, Farrukhabad, and Phulpur, where margins were less than 5000 votes, none were as slim as the purported 1000 or 500 votes.
In another significant development, six women emerged victorious in the recent Lok Sabha elections from Madhya Pradesh, where the BJP won all 29 constituencies, including Chhindwara, a stronghold of veteran Congressman Kamal Nath.
In the 2009 elections, six women were also elected from Madhya Pradesh, including five from the BJP and one from the Congress. In the 2024 elections, Lata Wankhede had the highest victory margin among the women winners, defeating Congress? Chandra Bhushan Singh Bundela from Sagar by over 4.71 lakh votes.
