In the wake of the tragic death of 26-year-old Vaishnavi Hagawane—allegedly due to dowry harassment—NCP (Sharad Pawar) leader and Baramati MP Supriya Sule has announced a powerful, statewide campaign titled "Dowry-Free Maharashtra, Violence-Free Families", set to launch from June 22.

Vaishnavi, daughter-in-law of expelled NCP leader Rajendra Hagawane, was found hanging at her home in Bavdhan, Pimpri-Chinchwad, on May 16. Her family has alleged persistent dowry-related harassment, triggering public outrage and renewed demands for social reform.

Responding strongly to the incident, Sule called it a "deeply disturbing and shameful" reflection of ongoing societal injustice. “This is not just about expressing grief or anger, it’s time for active, meaningful change,” she said. “The heartbreaking case of Vaishnavi being driven to death due to dowry harassment is deeply disturbing. In a state known for leading the charge on women’s emancipation, such an incident is nothing short of shameful. Maharashtra is shaken. This moment demands not just outrage but action.”

Taking to her official social media platforms, Sule unveiled the campaign’s slogan: “Dowry-Free Maharashtra, Violence-Free Families. A movement of awareness, for our daughters, by all of us.”

The campaign, Sule stated, will be rolled out in phases across the next year, covering all regions of Maharashtra. It will include awareness drives, community engagement, and collaborations with NGOs, legal experts, and student organizations.

“Our goal is clear — to build a Maharashtra free of dowry and family violence. This is the true tribute to Vaishnavi,” she asserted.

Calling for collective action, Sule made a heartfelt appeal to the public: “I humbly urge my brothers and sisters across the state to join this movement. Let us unite to build a dowry-free, violence-free society.”
