A fresh war of words has erupted between tech billionaire Elon Musk and US President Donald Trump, after Trump announced plans to slap a 20% tariff on imports from the European Union. The move is part of Trump’s revived “America First” agenda aimed at addressing trade deficits with countries like Italy, which he claims unfairly benefit from the US market.
While Trump is doubling down on protectionism, Musk has voiced concern, arguing that such tariffs could isolate American industries and disrupt vital innovation links.
Musk, a vocal advocate of open markets and international collaboration, warned that protectionist barriers would hurt technological progress and hinder the free flow of talent and ideas across borders.
“Innovation thrives when economies are connected, not walled off,” Musk posted on X, underscoring his belief that global partnerships drive progress.
Trump, however, has remained unwavering in his “Make America Great Again” message, calling tariffs a necessary tool to restore US manufacturing and protect American workers from what he describes as unfair foreign competition.
“We cannot let Europe drain our wealth any longer,” Trump declared during a campaign-style event on Monday, defending the tariff plan as essential for economic security.
The latest standoff highlights a growing ideological rift between the two powerful figures. While Musk promotes a borderless approach to innovation, Trump is determined to tighten economic controls and build domestic self-reliance.
