With the Maharashtra Assembly elections approaching, political parties across the state are intensifying their efforts to secure a victory. The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its ally, Eknath Shinde's Shiv Sena, have recently taken their campaign strategies to the national stage by heading to Delhi for crucial discussions.
According to reports from the Free Press Journal (FPJ), Maharashtra's Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Chief Minister Eknath Shinde held a significant meeting with Union Home Minister Amit Shah. The primary focus of their discussion was the upcoming state elections, with a particular emphasis on candidate selection and alliance dynamics.
A BJP leader from Mumbai, speaking to FPJ, revealed that there is considerable enthusiasm among party members, with as many as 16 leaders eager to contest the polls. "The crucial decision for the party was whether to contest only seven seats that they have in their quota or go for more," he explained. This decision is pivotal as it could determine the party's strategy and potential success in the elections.
In addition to candidate selection, another major topic of discussion was the role of Ajit Pawar's Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) in the alliance. Sources indicate that Shinde and Fadnavis discussed with Shah the complexities of dealing with the Ajit Pawar-led NCP. Within the BJP, there has been ongoing debate about whether to fully integrate Pawar into their election strategy or to offer him a limited number of seats, forcing him to decide on his continued alliance with the National Democratic Alliance (NDA).
Senior BJP leaders have expressed dissatisfaction with Pawar's inclusion in the BJP-led Maharashtra cabinet, pointing to the NCP's poor performance in the recent Lok Sabha elections. Despite contesting four seats, the NCP managed to secure only one victory, with Pawar's wife, Sunetra, losing her seat. There is now speculation about some NCP MLAs considering a return to Sharad Pawar's faction, adding further complexity to the BJP's decision on seat-sharing arrangements.
Furthermore, sources have highlighted strained relations between Shinde and Pawar, with the BJP often acting as a mediator between the two leaders. The alliance's internal dynamics and the distribution of seats will play a crucial role in shaping the election campaign and its outcomes.
As the Maharashtra Assembly elections draw nearer, the BJP and its allies are meticulously planning their strategies, aiming to navigate the intricate political landscape and secure a decisive victory. The discussions in Delhi are expected to have significant implications for the party's approach and its prospects in the upcoming polls.
