A powerful 7.1-magnitude earthquake struck the Nepal-Tibet border early Tuesday morning, claiming the lives of at least 32 people and injuring 38 others, according to media reports. The quake, reported at 6:35 AM (IST) by the National Centre for Seismology (NCS), had its epicentre in Xizang (Tibet Autonomous Region), near the Nepal border, at a depth of 10 kilometres.

Devastation in Tibet

Xinhua News Agency confirmed that the fatalities and injuries occurred in Xizang, with extensive property damage reported. In Tonglai Village, Changsuo Township, Xigaze (Shigatse), multiple houses collapsed, leaving residents in distress. Rescue operations are underway to provide relief to those affected.

Aftershocks and Widespread Tremors

The region experienced two significant aftershocks soon after the initial quake. At 7:02 AM, a 4.7-magnitude tremor was recorded, followed by a 4.9-magnitude quake at 7:07 AM. Both aftershocks were centred near the original epicentre, adding to the anxiety of residents.

The tremors were felt across North India, including Bihar, West Bengal, Sikkim, and Delhi-NCR. Residents in Bihar rushed out of their homes in panic, though no casualties or property damage were reported in India.

Epicentre Details

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) pinpointed the epicentre 93 kilometres northeast of Lobuche, near the Nepal-Tibet border. Lobuche, a small village near the Khumbu Glacier and approximately 150 kilometres east of Kathmandu, is close to Everest Base Camp.

A Region Prone to Quakes

This seismic event has reignited concerns in the region, known for its vulnerability to devastating earthquakes. In 2015, a 7.8-magnitude earthquake in Nepal caused widespread destruction and claimed nearly 9,000 lives.
