In a strong statement issued on Friday, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma expressed concern over what he described as deliberate attempts to incite communal tension in the state following Eid celebrations. Addressing reporters in Guwahati, the Chief Minister cited incidents in districts such as Dhubri, Lakhipur, Lakhimpur, Goalpara, and Hojai, saying that certain groups were intentionally violating local laws and disturbing the peace.

“After Eid, a section is trying to harm communal harmony in a few places in Assam — first Dhubri, then Lakhipur, Lakhimpur, Goalpara, and now Hojai. This is not coincidental; it is part of a larger plan to provoke,” said Sarma.

Referring to the Assam Cattle Preservation Act, 2021, Sarma reminded citizens that the consumption and sale of beef is strictly prohibited within a 5-kilometre radius of any Hindu temple or Namghar (a traditional Vaishnavite place of worship in Assam). He emphasized that the act is not aimed at targeting any community, but is designed to ensure mutual respect for religious sentiments and public order.

“Our law is very clear. Within a 5-km radius of temples and Namghars, the eating and selling of beef is completely prohibited. We have instructed district administrations to enforce this law with immediate effect and without compromise,” he said.

The Chief Minister further noted that district administrations have been directed to remain alert and take preventive action wherever there are signs of rising tension. Local police units have also been tasked with ensuring strict vigilance and timely response to any potential disturbances.
