Fresh fault lines have emerged within Maharashtra’s ruling Mahayuti alliance as behind-the-scenes negotiations intensify over who will claim the powerful Mumbai Mayor’s post after the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections. According to India TV sources, the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena has firmly staked its claim to lead the civic body—at least for the first year of the five-year term.
The Shiv Sena’s renewed demand is rooted in symbolism and political legacy. Party leaders have argued that January 23 marks the 100th birth anniversary of Shiv Sena founder Bal Thackeray, and allowing the party to hold the mayor’s chair in the inaugural year would be a fitting tribute to the late leader’s enduring influence on Mumbai’s politics. Sena leaders believe such a move would also respect the emotional connect of the party cadre with the BMC, long considered the Sena’s traditional stronghold.
Earlier, the Shiv Sena had proposed an equal power-sharing formula, suggesting that the mayor’s term be split between the BJP and the Sena for two-and-a-half years each. However, after sensing resistance within the BJP, the Sena scaled down its demand, limiting it to just the first year of the term.
India TV sources further indicate that the Shiv Sena has reminded its alliance partner of the support it extended during politically turbulent phases at both the Centre and the state. With Bal Thackeray’s centenary year approaching, Sena leaders are pressing the BJP to agree to a one-year Sena mayor, followed by BJP leadership for the remaining four years.
Meanwhile, the BJP appears to be tightening its internal discipline ahead of the crucial mayoral election. The Mumbai BJP unit has reportedly instructed all newly elected corporators to remain in the city for the next 10 days. Party insiders say corporators have been told to seek prior permission from senior leaders even in case of emergencies that require travel.
This directive comes as the mayoral election process is expected to take eight to ten days. The BJP wants to avoid any last-minute surprises and ensure full attendance during voting.
